![]() The first used replacement transmission we tried had the same DAMN problem. ![]() I also helped someone else replace his slipping 5th gen Prelude auto trans. It seems the ones that want to go out, go out.) (BTW the Prelude with the bad trans had relatively LOW miles. It was slow to shift but worked and continued to work after we sold the car. I ended up putting in a good-used auto trans with 200,000 miles already on it. I even bartered someone for another TCM (transmission computer), and I rebuilt the gear selector (lever box) and gear selection switch. We tried everything to fix or diagnose it to no avail. It also would spin or not spin the wheels in N depending on whether you came to N from R or D. In fact instead of just slipping, I'm pretty sure it now engaged "two gears at once" on shift into 4th. My friend never really figured out what had been wrong with it, but he was confident it had nothing wrong remaining after he rebuilt it. The case of the transmission was suspiciously clean, as if the used car dealer or previous owner had already rebuilt it once before. My friend who has rebuilt loads of transmissions (but not a Honda transmission before) offered to rebuild the one in my wife's 5th gen that had a slipping automatic transmission. It's going in for an MOT tomorrow but once it's passed I really want to get the transmission sorted (it also needs valve stem seals and a timing belt but that's a separate issue). Parts are getting a bit thin on the ground for these now. In an ideal world I'd do a manual swap but I'm not really sure where to get the parts and how much it will cost me. I have a feeling just stripping it down and cleaning it all out will fix it but I'd need the rebuild kit anyway and might as well replace the clutches too while I'm in there. Wondering if anyone has any tips on rebuilding these gearboxes, I've found a few rebuild kits available but I'll have to order them from the US. Since reverse works I'm not sure if the 4th clutch is the problem as it is my understanding 4th and reverse share the same clutch?Īlready tried a fluid flush and cleaning out all the solenoids including the lockup solenoid, shift solenoid A,B,C and the clutch pressure control solenoid (got a new one of these coming so maybe this will fix it but I'm doubtful).Ĭould it be anything else? 2nd clutch pressure switch perhaps? All the other gears including reverse work reasonably well though it is slow to shift and flares between gears sometimes. It has the infamous sportshift automatic and has developed a problem where it slips in 4th gear.
